Knit the remembrance poppy using straight knitting needles

Materials Needed

* Scheepjes Catona Cotton 4-ply cotton yarn
1 x 10g Ball of Poppy Rose #390
1 x 10g Ball of Forest Green #412
1 x 10g Ball of Jet Black #110
* 3mm Knitting Needles (US3.25) (UK11)
* Tapestry Needle
* 3 x Stitch Markers
* Safety Pin

Pattern Notes

* Tension Gauge - 26 Sts x 36 Rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm)
* Finished poppy size - 6cm by 8cm (2 x 3 inches)
* Pattern is suitable for a beginner.
* Poppy is worked up flat.

Main Poppy Pattern

Poppy - Using Poppy Rose #390

Cast on 9sts
Row 1 - k9. (9)

place SM after 3rd, 6th and 9th sts.


Poppy Petals
Working in the next 3 stitches only (up to next SM).
Row 2 - k3. (3)
Row 3 - (kfb) 3 times. (6)
Row 4 - p1, k1, (kfb) 2 times, k1, p1. (8)
Row 5 - kfb, p6, kfb. (10)
Row 6 - p1, kfb, (k1, kfb) 4 times. (15)
Row 7 - p15. (15)
Row 8 - p1, k13, p1. (15)
Row 9 - p2tog, p3, p2tog, k1, p2tog, p3, p2tog. (11)
Row 10 - p2tog, k7, p2tog. (9)
Row 11 - p2tog, p5, p2tog. (7)
Row 12 - p2tog, p3, p2tog. (5)

Cast off knitwise, fasten off and secure the end.

Reattach the yarn and repeat from Row 2 to 12 inclusive for the remaining two petals.

With the cast-on yarn tail, weave through the 9 cast on stitches and pull to close.


When securing the reattached yarn tails closest to the centre of the poppy, carefully join the petals together on Rows 2 and 3 as desired.

Poppy Centre - using Jet Black #110

Cast on 18 sts,
then cast off knitwise.

Curl the poppy centre around itself and secure into a circle with it’s yarn tail, while attaching to the centre of the poppy.

Leaf - using Forest Green #412

The remembrance poppy is traditionally worn on the left lapel close to your heart with the leaf pointing to 11 o’clock
