It is heartbreaking when your friend or your loved one tells you they have cancer. All you want to do is hug them tight, be able to help them and show them how much they are loved. When my very much loved friend battled with cancer I designed this blanket to give to her, to bring her warmth during difficult times; now I want to share this crochet blanket pattern with you so you too can make one to support your loved ones.

This Cancer Support Lap Blanket Crochet Pattern is made up of motifs that use the puff stitch to spell out words of encouragement and care. Crocheting this blanket is a heartfelt gesture to show your support with those who are battling cancer. Whether it be for a friend, family member, chemo patients, survivors, or hospice care recipients, this crochet project can provide much-needed treatment support and comfort.

This blanket project carries significant meaning beyond its aesthetics - It's an act of love that showcases compassion towards someone enduring life's most challenging moments.I hope that this crochet pattern will provide you with the same comfort it did for me and my friend.

Cancer Suport Lap Blanket Crochet Motifs Pattern

*Finished Blanket Size - approx 42 x 54 inches.
*Tension Gauge - 15 sts by 17 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10cm x 10cm)
*Pattern is written in US terminology.

*I advise you to secure your yarn ends into the back of the corner puff stitch on each motif, so this does not effect your edges when sewing together.
*Follow directions carefully, not all motifs have one stitch or one row after/before their puff border, some have two. This is to ensure that all the motifs align correctly when sewn together. Also some of the last rows of the motif’s written instructions are underlined to highlight it is not in the number sequence.
* Use solid plain yarn colours not variegated, stripes, etc, and use the same yarn weight for all motifs.

Puff Stitch Explained
(Yarn over, pull up a loop) 6 times (13 loops on hook), yarn over, pull through 12 loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops.

Tips to make the perfect puff stitches
*The puff stitch is always created when working on the backside of the blanket. It will naturally pop in position on the front side, if this doesn’t happen, then work the Sc st after the puff st, slightly tighter than the other Sc sts.
*Use a metal crochet hook.
*If your puff stitches are too tight when working up, then increase the height slightly on the 1st loop pulled up.

MAKING UP SECTION

The whipstitch join (explained below) creates a flat seam when sewing the motifs together.
It is your choice if you want to sew up all motifs with the same yarn colour or the different colours to match the motif border.

Important making up notes.
* Lie all your motifs out face up as shown in the chart below, ensure the motifs are the correct way around.
* The Puff Stitches will align when sewing the motifs together, if they do not, then a row end or stitch has been missed and the join will need to be done again.
* It may help to pin your motifs in place before joining.
* Refer to the chart on below to ensure correct starting and finishing positions for each motif.

This is one way of using different border colours to attach the motifs.
* Directions are given as if you are looking at the motif (in CAPITAL LETTERS) the right way up and facing you.
1. Mango - Sew the top and left side of the CHERISH motif, attaching Courage, Family, Faith & Friends.
2. Super Duper Yellow - Sew the top and right side of the BELIEVE motif, attaching the Strength, medium Blank, Fight & Friends.

Whipstitch

Worked in all “row end posts” or “stitches”
along the edge of the motif.

Using your tapestry needle, insert it under both
loops of a “stitch” or “row end post”on one
motif then the next “row end post” or “stitch”
of the other motif, working alternatively
up the edge. (As shown in diagram below)

Pulling tightly on the wool after 5-6 sts to
tighten the stitches but not too tight to cause
your work to kink.

*This chart will help with the sewing together. Each box is either a stitch, or row end.
*Do not make up your motifs from this chart, they will not work.
*The puff stitch borders will always align when sewing together.
