Free Pumpkin Knitting Pattern – Worked Flat on Straight Needles

• Scheepjes Catona 4 ply cotton yarn
  • 2 × 10g balls of Rich Coral #410
  • 1 × 10g ball of Caramel #506, or a small amount of brown 4 ply yarn for the stalk
• 3mm knitting needles (UK 11 / US 2.5)
• Yarn needle
• Toy stuffing
• Scissors

Pumpkin

Using Rich Coral #410, cast on 11 sts.

Row 1 and all following odd-numbered rows: P.

Row 2: (K1, m1) 10 times, k1. (21 sts)

Row 4: (K2, m1) 10 times, k1. (31 sts)

Row 6: (K3, m1) 10 times, k1. (41 sts)

Row 8: (K4, m1) 10 times, k1. (51 sts)

Row 10: (K5, m1) 10 times, k1. (61 sts)

Row 12: (K6, m1) 10 times, k1. (71 sts)

Rows 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24: K. (71 sts)

Row 26: (K5, k2tog) 10 times, k1. (61 sts)

Row 28: (K4, k2tog) 10 times, k1. (51 sts)

Row 30: (K3, k2tog) 10 times, k1. (41 sts)

Row 32: (K2, k2tog) 10 times, k1. (31 sts)

Row 34: (K1, k2tog) 10 times, k1. (21 sts)

Row 36: K2tog 10 times, k1. (11 sts)

Do not cast off. Leave a long yarn tail ready for making up.

Stalk

Using Caramel #506 or another brown 4 ply yarn, cast on 7 sts.

Row 1: K. (7 sts)

Row 2: P. (7 sts)

Cast off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing.

Making Up Your Knitted Pumpkin

Step 1 – Close the Top

Leaving the final 11 stitches on the needle, cut the yarn to leave a long tail. Thread the tail through the 11 remaining stitches, remove them from the needle and pull firmly to close.

Step 2 – Seam and Stuff

Using the yarn tail, sew the side edges together to form a neat seam. Stuff the pumpkin evenly with toy stuffing.

Thread yarn through the 11 cast-on stitches and pull firmly to close the remaining opening. Secure the yarn.

Step 3 – Shape the Pumpkin

Take the long yarn tail from the bottom centre, up the outside of the pumpkin and down through the top centre, returning to the bottom centre.

Pull the yarn firmly enough to create a defined section. Repeat this five more times, spacing the strands evenly around the pumpkin to form six sections altogether.

Step 4 – Add the Stalk

Secure and weave in the remaining yarn ends. Roll or fold the knitted stalk into shape, then sew it securely into the top centre of the pumpkin.

Step 5 – Your Pumpkin Is Complete

Your knitted pumpkin is ready to add to an autumn display, use as a Halloween decoration or give as a handmade seasonal gift.
