Free Granite Cable Baby Blanket Knitting Pattern
Learning to knit cables becomes much less intimidating when the technique is worked within a calm, repeating pattern.
This free Granite Cable Baby Blanket knitting pattern combines raised cable columns with softly textured panels to create a cosy, timeless blanket. Once the eight-row repeat is established, the knitting becomes wonderfully rhythmic and enjoyable.
The pattern includes two versions:
- A classic one-colour cable blanket
- A pink, soft-lilac and white Intarsia version
Choose the plain version if you would like to concentrate entirely on your first cable project, or add the Intarsia colour sections when you are ready to practise managing several working yarns.
Both versions are worked flat in one piece. The Seed Stitch border is knitted at the same time as the main blanket, so there is no separate border to sew on and no stitches to pick up afterwards.

Finished Blanket Size
Approximately 36 × 36 inches (91.5 × 91.5cm).
Gauge
22 stitches and 30 rows = 4 × 4 inches (10 × 10cm).
Change your needle size if necessary to achieve the correct gauge. Checking your gauge is particularly helpful for this design because cables can draw the knitted fabric inward.
Materials for the One-Colour Blanket
- DK weight yarn
- Approximately 510g used
- The original blanket used four 140g balls of Bernat Softee Baby DK in White #02000
- 4mm knitting needles (US 6 / UK 8)
- 4mm cable needle
- Tapestry or yarn needle
- Scissors
- Stitch markers are optional
Materials for the Intarsia Blanket
- DK weight yarn
- One 140g ball of White #02000 – approximately 43g used
- Two 140g balls of Pink #02001 – approximately 224g used
- Two 140g balls of Soft Lilac #30185 – approximately 224g used
- 4mm knitting needles (US 6 / UK 8)
- 4mm cable needle
- Tapestry or yarn needle
- Scissors
- Stitch markers are optional
The examples in the photos used Bernat Softee Baby DK, but another smooth DK yarn may be substituted when the correct gauge is achieved. A plain, smooth yarn will show the cable twists and textured panels most clearly.

How to Work cf6
Slip the next three stitches onto a cable needle and hold them at the front of your work.
Knit the next three stitches from the main needle, then knit the three stitches from the cable needle.
This brings the stitches held at the front across the other three stitches and creates the raised cable twist.

Helpful Pattern Notes
- The blanket is worked flat.
- Cast on 220 stitches.
- The border and main blanket are knitted together in one piece.
- Rows 9–16 form the eight-row main pattern repeat.
- Work the eight-row repeat 34 times in total for the stated length.
- Keep the first and last six border stitches in Seed Stitch.
- The one-colour and Intarsia versions use the same cable pattern.
- The Intarsia version introduces the colour sections on Row 8.
- When working Intarsia, twist the yarns together at each colour change to prevent holes.
- Keep separate yarn supplies attached to the individual colour sections rather than carrying yarn across the back.
- Sew in all yarn ends securely after completing the blanket.
Preparing the Intarsia Yarn
Before beginning the Intarsia version, wind approximately 25g from the white yarn ball into a separate supply.
The two white yarn supplies are used for the borders at each side of the blanket. The pink and soft-lilac balls form the four central colour sections.
From Row 8 onward, you will work with six yarn supplies:
- One white supply for the first border
- Four coloured supplies for the central sections
- One white supply for the final border
Arrange the yarns in working order before beginning Row 8. This will make the colour changes easier to follow and help prevent the yarns from becoming unnecessarily tangled.

Finishing Your Granite Cable Blanket
Lay the blanket flat and gently arrange it into shape.
If your chosen yarn permits, lightly block the finished blanket to help even the textured panels and encourage the cables to sit neatly. Avoid stretching the cable columns too firmly, as this may flatten their raised definition.
Check that every yarn end has been sewn in securely, particularly at the Intarsia colour changes.
